I love to spot trends in interior design and consider how current and popular looks can be incorporated into homes without going overboard.
So many times trending looks are coming back around again! I have definitely seen my share of styles that have waned for years and then suddenly been brought back to life.
Trends are definitely something to take with a grain of salt, something to note and keep your eye on, but not take too seriously. After all, most people can’t afford to throw everything out and start over every few years.
It’s taken me a long time to collect and get my home the way I want it. I’m at the point where I prefer minor changes and updates if I’m going to invest in any new trending items.
If you’re like me, although you may love your home’s design, you still like to have an eye on trends and current styles to update your look once in a while.
Today, I’m linking up with 6 other leading design bloggers who have great style in their homes that evolved over the years, just like mine. You’re going to enjoy checking out the design trends we are all loving right now for 2022.
Their posts are linked down at the end of this post. Be sure to check them out!
2022 Interior Design Trends To Watch
In spite of being a bit nervous about getting out and about again, I’ve cautiously been attending my favorite markets and trade shows (masked, vaccinated and boosted, of course).
I attended Highpoint Market this last October where everything was pretty much up and running again and then I just got back from Dallas Market and the number one lighting show in the nation, Lightovation.
These vendors have not been sitting around on their hands the last two years. They’ve been developing their design and product offerings forward, in spite of all the industry slow-downs.
This gives me a little insight into what is coming to retailers near you in the next year, if it isn’t already out there online. Take a look below, at the strong design trends I’ve noted.
1) Rattan, caning, wicker, rush trend - Natural, textural, woven Elements
These textured, natural elements are getting incorporated into furnishings of all kinds, from casegoods, wall decor and seating to lighting. While I shared this in my trend report from Highpoint last fall and my report from Lightovation in summer 2021 when I first noted it, it was obvious at this recent market in Dallas too.
Here were some of the new intros I saw there that echoed this textural trend.
Natural, textural elements like this can be incorporated into many different styles and serve to lighten up an interior. They can brighten a dark, heavy space that is filled with antiques and bring contrast and warmth to a modern, slick or even “glam” environment.
I saw these elements in everything from small accessories to more major furnishings and I think these are easily incorporated into interiors for an update.
2) Color Trends - Greens and TerraCotta
I’m a big fan of whites for interiors and then cool toned colors too. We’ve all been into that for the last 10 years and believe me, whites aren’t going away anytime soon!
However, you can mix in some more trendy colors with whites and cooler tones to add some of that warmth and earthiness that is coming back strongly in 2022. (I’ve got more posts on that coming soon!)
After all, three major paint companies declared some subtle green tones as their colors of the year in 2022, so what does that tell you?
Well, I saw some greens at Dallas market, at some art vendor showrooms and thought it really spoke to those popular green color tones. These were all new intros.
I was looking for rugs in subtle sage green tones and found a few for a project. This one below might be a contender. Looks more gray in the pic, but it in person, more greenish gray and works with my color palette.
I actually think the greens play out really well as wall or cabinetry color. Green is basically a neutral, right? Those COTY 2022 greens especially would be easy to live with used in the envelope of the room.
I did see some terracotta coming into some showrooms too. I’ve mentioned this color before here and feel like it is a good way to bring in warmth and works well with existing travertine floors. Travertine tends to have a pinkish hue and terracotta is in that color family. I love this color with warm whites especially.
The crispness of a white can always freshen up a space.
Check out this whimsical lantern from Currey and Co. with terracotta bird figurines. There were other versions of this fixture as well.
You can incorporate a trendy color in a less permanent and perhaps more cost effective way in your home by painting a wall. Rather than purchasing a big piece of furniture, doing custom window treatments or investing in a hard surface type of finish material like tile or stone, paint might be a good place to try something trendy.
One of my favorite gift/home stores in my area that, sadly, is no longer open, used to paint accent walls every season with some kind of vibrant color. It was always fun to see the change and everything in the shop looked different with just that color change.
See how this showroom used a terracotta color backdrop with their white/neutral decor.
This leads me to my next trend.
3) White or light finished furnishings
I mentioned white / light furniture in one of the blogposts I did after Highpoint. It seemed that every showroom I walked into had white finished wood furniture everywhere as new intros.
Dallas Market is a home and gift market, so it is more about accessories and then they have a lot of lighting because of the big Lightovation show. They were showing lots of new products in white as well.
I definitely love white plaster accessories and have some myself. I’m getting ready for a few photo shoots coming up and have my storage unit ready with some extra white vases, bowls and boxes, everything from white plaster to white marble.
I feel like this white or light stained furniture is a pretty sure trend that will be around for awhile.
These white plaster pierced vases and the white floor candleholders are nice accessories that can help brighten up a room.
Check out this white, brass tipped ceiling fan from Monte Carlo fans seen at Dallas Market. Could it be any prettier? Ceiling fans have come a long way!!
4) Curvy furniture
You know I’ve mentioned this a few times in the past couple of years and curvy furnishings are still here to stay in 2022.
Don’t think you have to throw out your track arm sofa though! I’m working with my son and DIL a little bit on their home and we just purchased two swivel tub chairs to work in their living room that has a more boxy sofa with a track arm.
You CAN combine these different shapes if you like. It adds layers and helps your interiors not feel like a one-note story.
Here’s a curvy tub chair with that cut-out style I’ve mentioned before paired with more boxy upholstery and a rectangular coffee table in a showroom at Dallas Market.
Here is a project of mine where we did a curved swivel with a large L-shaped sectional and square ottoman.
Sometimes these curvy shapes might work better than something more rectilinear in an oddly shaped space. In that case, some of these curved sectionals that can be put together in different ways, might be a good solution for you.
How to add these 2022 interior design trends in to your home
What I like about these trends is that you don’t have to go all in or change everything to use them in your home.
Pull in some texture with natural woven decorative items and furnishings. Something small, even like a lampshade, can be just enough.
To add in a trending color, change your backdrop with paint. Painting a wall or maybe the back of a bookshelf is not quite so expensive as investing in custom upholstery or window treatments.
Do some white/light furnishings to brighten up the space. If you have a room full of brown or dark furniture, consider your next purchase to be something light for contrast and layering.
You can place a few curvy accents as furniture, lighting, or perhaps where a curved piece is best for the layout of the room. Shapes can be mixed in a room!
It seems these days that almost anything goes, especially if you you love it, tend to it and maintain it properly. Have a go with something trendy this year to surprise yourself!
