I’m back from my first Highpoint Market in 2 years and I’m ready to share all the design trends and inspiration I’ve seen. It was great to get back!
3 Major Interior Design And Home Decor Trends That Stood Out At Highpoint Market 2021
Here’s a brief overview of what I’m about to share, and I have lots of gorgeous pics and some insider info that will shed some light onto these major design trends.
I’m dividing this post in half, because I have so many images! So, 3 major design trends today, and 3 in my next post. :-)
I have more micro-trends that I’ll be sharing later too. They are really fun, so stay tuned for that one!
White wood finishes
Rattan, caning, wicker and rush
Curves on all kinds of furniture
Trend #1 - White or light wood finishes
I’ve always loved a mix of wood finishes in a room and often mix painted and stained, brown tones and blacks with lighter toned finishes. It seems like at this market, there were many more options for lighter finishes, either painted, white-stained, or some kind of white washed type wood finish option.
When I toured Woodbridge Furniture with the rep, she said that they were responding to end user requests for lighter finishes. They now offer light painted finishes and some lighter wood tone options for some of their existing product as well as new intros.
These chairs and barstools were introduced in a white painted look for this market.
The great thing about white or a white washed wood finish is that you can put them in a room with a bright paint color and the room looks colorful.
Your bigger investment piece, the furniture, that you hope will last you a really long time, can remain this white color, while you can repaint your walls every few years for a change, for a lesser cost. :-)
This white painted furniture below, from Hooker’s Melange brand, was introduced for a younger demographic that is indicating they want cleaner lines and lighter finishes, as per their sales and press people.
I think they nailed it!
The white shagreen finish from Sarreid on these casegoods have the same effect with an interesting texture.
More white painted wood pieces, these below from Highland House.
A white painted option is available on many pieces from Chelsea House, like this new round coffee table, below.
Hooker had lots of new white finishes introduced in their line this market.
These light wood tones, from Vanguard, had a really modern feel. Their showroom was really filled with light wood furniture and white upholstery, except for the Thom Filicia side, which went more dark and moody.
This cerused white wood look seen here at Vanguard was shown in many other showrooms too.
Here’s a beautiful two-tone finish nightstand from Hickory White, a white painted look with a light wood tone.
Palacek does this white washed wood finish on textural pieces so well.
Check out all the white look in this vignette from Universal Furniture. That console in the back has a nice two tone combination of a painted finish with a light wood tone. (PS - See the curves too? We’ll talk more about that later in this post!)
Trend #2 - Rattan, caning, wicker and rush, texture is coming on strong
Many vendors had new textural furniture pieces, made with rattan, caning, wicker, and rush. There is a reason for this, it’s sustainable and easier to get right now than a lot of wood products.
I visited Red Egg, a showroom in a darling old home, and the rattan looks there were so fresh and appealing.
The Roshambeaux showroom did not disappoint! It was full of rattan and wicker goodness too.
Century Furniture showed some new textural pieces too, with rattan and wicker.
This vendor, Mainly Baskets, had such a great selection of wicker. I loved seeing some of their really unique pieces, like these pedestals with the urns (can be bought separately).
I always love these African baskets as wall decor and Dira Life did not disappoint. They also had woven Morrocan urns which I’ve seen but couldn’t figure out where to source, so I’m glad to have seen them.
Check out the caning and woven panels on both of these similarly styled armoires (both new intros) from Hooker and then from Universal Furniture. The woven panels give a light, coastal feel to this large piece. I really love that white and cane combination too.
Check out these new rope wrapped furniture pieces from Hooker. These are great for a light coastal look and mix well with all kinds of furniture finishes. The legs on the desk and then the posts on the bed are wrapped in a rush rope.
I found a new wicker / rattan vendor during this market, Kenian Fine Rattan Furniture. Love the little luggage rack, I’ve been looking for one of those for my own guest room.
This is a great rattan bar stool with a rush seat and back from Chelsea House. It comes in 3 finishes including this white. The wood frame chair with the woven back and arm panels is from Woodbridge.
These pieces from Bernhardt incorporate a textural wrapped face with chunky, rounded details.
Trend #3 - Curves on Everything!
In case you couldn’t tell from a few of my images above, curves are still hot in furniture design. It seemed like everything had curves!
So, like the armoires pictured above, both case goods and upholstery picked up the curvy lines. I don’t think I’ve seen more rounded upholstery!
Isn’t this a cute settee from Vanguard?
(Whoops, there I am in the mirror with my mask! :-)
This curved bed and bench were a popular new look among many manufacturers. These are from Universal Furniture.
I think round swivels are so fun in girl’s bedrooms. This one is the perfect size for a corner to dream in, from Sam Moore.
This bed and the case pieces have curvy details that remind me of an 80’s style.
Tables, sofas, even the pillows are round in this vignette at Universal Furniture!
Curvy cabinet pulls….no problem.
Nathan Anthony really brought the curves this market. I used their Embrace sofa in my virtual showhouse room last year that was perfect in that living room.
This sectional was unique because of the asymmetrical back. See how it slopes to one end?
The new spherical foot on this sculptural chair gives this collection a really modern look.
I love the curved detail on this upholstered headboard from Highland House. It would blend well in a traditionally styled home.
The curved sofa and tables mixed with the grid of the bookcase is a glimpse of the contrast you can achieve by mixing in some of these new curvy pieces to your home.
Bernhardt brought the curvy modern shapes this market with these new intros.
This console from Bernhardt brought those curves and mixed white with warm wood. Are you seeing how these details and new intros are defining the trends? Time will tell, when the products are more out there in retail, if they will stick. Care to offer your opinion below?
