I’ve got 3 more major interior design and home decor trends spotted for you today, fresh from Highpoint Market 2021!
These were hard to miss!
3 More Major Interior Design and Home Decor Trends from Highpoint Market 2021
Giant sectional sofas
White / Off-white bouclé (textural) fabric
More Desks / Work From Home Options
Trend #1 - Giant Sectional Sofas
I have never seen so many gigantic sectional sofas in my life. Well, showrooms do have the space to go wild with what they can do with a sectional sofa, so they might as well go all out!
They definitely showed us the possibilities at this market. These two below were shown at Vanguard. The table insert in the first one here is nice as is that amazingly curved sofa table that fits the back of that sofa!
The Universal Furniture showroom had a circle shape for this sectional. Great for family meetings???
Century Furniture had to have the longest sectional I saw.
And this configuration, also from Century, was quite impressive. The curvy forms really can make for some interesting shapes and functionality.
This one, at Vanguard, came out last market (Spring 2021) and has a queen bed! You don’t even have to put yourself to bed at night!
This one from Moe’s Home Collection was pretty impressive too.
One more, also from Century….
This sectional wasn’t so huge, but I do like the unique deeper section in this one from Sam Moore that creates an angle. Sometimes you just have these hard to fit rooms that need some tweaking with furniture to make right. (Usually to be able to see the tv properly!)
Trend #2 - White / Off-white bouclé (textural) fabric
You can see from some of the pics above, this white/off-white bouclé or shearling type fabric was all over upholstery at market. It has been for awhile now, but it really was everywhere.
I think that primarily it is used because it shows off the shapes of upholstered pieces so well, much like how we used linen for upholstery before high perfomance fabrics came about.
I have to say, I really like how it was used in the Woodbridge showroom, paired with a cognac leather on the same piece. Looks cozy, doesn’t it?
You can see how these bulky curved pieces really show off their shape with the nubby texture and light coloration of this fabric. This chair is a new intro from Bernhardt.
This tub chair from Hickory White is a comfy sit and looks really cozy in a fabric like this.
This all white seating group in Universal Furniture would look pretty sterile without the texture of a bouclé fabric.
Trend #3 - More desks / Work From Home Options
A lot of vendors came out with new desks or desk chairs, etc. for the work-from-home crowd. We all need something pretty and more efficient these days for these working environments, right?
This new desk from Hooker Furniture has accessible outlets at the back and a charging station area at the left back corner. You just lay your phone there and it charges.
The top slides out like this, seen below, for a deeper desk area.
A new desk unit from Bernhardt has a modern look. The corner section is really handy for an L-shaped home office situation.
Here’s a new desk chair from Sam Moore. It has that cool cut-out style I saw a lot of this time at market. Your office chair doesn’t have to look like it was pulled out of your cubicle at work! It can look more residential in feel.
Vanguard has a new desk chair also and a modern look desk from Michael Weiss. This fully upholstered look can make a home office feel more homey and comfortable.
This desk from Red Egg, below, would be perfect tucked in a bedroom corner or beside the bed in lieu of a nightstand. We all know we’ve had to make #WFH situations in lots of places in our homes recently!
I love the painted look. Some wicker storage baskets tucked underneath would look residential and work well for some place to stash supplies.
Woodbridge Furniture has a new modern look desk and a more traditional, dark wood. A desk for either style you want!
There are outlets on top of the dark stained desk and a grommet for wire management.
Fairfield Chair had their Work Ready collection with storage options for filing and printers, etc. The smaller unit can roll under a desk top easily.
This modern file cabinet works just like the lateral file drawers at the office but looks waaaayyyyy prettier! From Vanguard, there are desks and other home office furniture that goes with it for a cohesive look.
Here’s a new desk from Vanguard. Love the inset top and see those drawer pedestals in the pic? They had more nice home office storage like that too. All very customizable.
Check out this smart looking vignette in the Hickory White showroom. Who wouldn’t want to work from home with an office like this?
Trend Spotting at Highpoint Market
It’s really interesting to see what other designers post about Highpoint Market finds on their Instagram feeds, etc. We all find something different that speaks to us.
I have a bit of a different take on this, as I’m looking at it more from my publisher/blogging point of view. I seek out reps and even the press people in showrooms to see what the new intros are and also ask why.
In my last post, I shared a few vendors that were filling a void in their line that their customers were asking for. That is key to identifying a trend with staying power.
Some of these trends may come and go quickly. The giant sectionals and bouclé fabric may just be there because it is best for showing off products. (Although, the rep told me that big queen bed has been super popular (introduced at the spring 2021 market), so maybe big sectionals are truly hot with buyers right now.)
Others like white painted / stained furniture, cleaner lines, more work from home options, etc. are more market driven. I love seeing how this all affects product design on down the road.
Coming up next!
Stay tuned for my next post on micro trends from Highpoint 2021! It’s a fun one, where I’ve noticed design details and products that are emerging and will be interesting to watch for at the next market. :-)
