I was so excited to be back at a trade show a week ago, attending Lightovation at Dallas Market, and saw 3 trends in lighting fixture design that I’m sharing with you today.
The unique aspect of this show is that this is particularly for lighting. The showrooms are permanent and they are large spaces with most of their products on display.
There are two full floors of lighting showrooms in the Trade Mart building, plus others scattered throughout the whole market center. You can really get the lowdown on what is going on in the world of lighting at this show like you can no other. The largest Visual Comfort Lighting showroom in the world is located here too, in the Interhall building.
It became apparent pretty quickly to me, that these 3 trends are coming on strong in new products.
Texture Wrapping With Rattan, Rope, Seagrass, and Leather Trend
The metal arms and shades of light fixtures from many lighting vendors are getting the wrap these days.
Materials like rattan, jute, seagrass and leather are adding warmth and softening the look of many light fixtures new to market. These are perfect for so many lighter looks, especially a coastal interior.

More rope wrapping at Currey and Co. They have a whole group of these fixtures, in several shapes and sizes, chandeliers to table lamps. Lightovation 2021 - carlaaston.com

I noticed this wrapping also on table lamps and furniture.

I really loved the leather wrapping of these fixtures from Arteriors. It comes in a light, cream leather and then a gray, on this chandelier and the lamps too.

Adjustability Trend - Adjustable fixtures to create different moods and effects
I noted this a lot in my last visit to Lightovation, in Jan 2020. However, I saw it more in really contemporary lighting and not widespread across various vendor product lines.
This time, I noticed everyone was doing some kind of adjustable lighting, from chandeliers to wall sconces. The ability to move your installed lighting to create different moods or focus on different tasks or walls, is becoming a real trend.
Lots of flexibility here with this fixture from Minka Group. Love the black and brass finish. Lightovation 2021 - carlaaston.com
More adjustable fixtures, these from Troy Lighting in a wood and black finish. Nice! Lightovation 2021 - carlaaston.com
This fixture from George Kovacs, Minka Group, is adjustable too. Each light can be rotated to focus anywhere in the rotation. Lightovation 2021 - carlaaston.com
This black and brass beauty from Hudson Valley Lighting adjusts also, the wall and the ceiling fixture. Lightovation 2021 - carlaaston.com
This modern suspended lighting was a real departure for Hubbardton Forge this year. Imagine that fixture in a tall, narrow space, and then adjusting it AFTER it is installed. :-)
They also showed one adaptation to be used as a divider of sorts, with the power coming from the floor and only the cable for the suspension at the ceiling. Then the lights can be adjusted up and down as you wish.

Black And Brass Finish Combination Trend
I admit it, sometimes the finishes are really what attract me to a light fixture. As a designer, I’m particularly drawn to multiple finish combinations on a single fixture.
As I noted at the last Lightovation show I attended back in Jan 2020, black and brass used in a combination was coming on strong. I noticed it even more prevalent now.
You can see in many of the fixtures I’ve already shared above, black and brass are here to stay.

This grid chandelier from Arteriors would look amazing over my dining table! :-) Love the black and brass combination here. Lightovation 2021 - carlaaston.com
Capital Lighting is a good go-to for more budget oriented lighting for me. They have some fixtures going with this black and brass combo too.
This modern table lamp in black and brass has just the right amount of modern simplicity with some edgy detail, from Mitzi Lighting.
These sophisticated fixtures from Visual Comfort were so light and airy. The black and brass combination works so well here to add delineation. Love the shape of the globes.

Minka Lavery makes some of my favorite ceiling fans, like this one, the Aviation. It is so slick in black and brass. A beautiful ceiling fan…….what??? Lightovation 2021 - carlaaston.com
New Flash - Guess what trend might be on its way back from the 70’s-80’s, whether you like or not…..
Pleated lamp shades! :-(
I’m “mature” enough to have lived with these and I am not a fan. The dust gets in those pleats and it is a maintenance nightmare! I for one, will not be going with this trend! Although it was fun to see them!
