I touched on a few lighting design trends last week in a post after Dallas Market and the Lightovation show I attended there. I have even more cool finds to share today that I think you will love and might want to consider in your home.
I’ve got some great photos and examples below, easy to scan and then save for later reference by pinning to Pinterest.
Take a look…..
My Questions When Noting design Trends or Style Spotting
When I visit trade shows and markets, I always ask them to show me what the new intros are and if I have a sales or marketing person with me, ask for deeper insight into why this is being offered.
Have customers asked for it?
Have they seen demand in existing similar products and need more to offer?
Is this a designer collaboration? What niche of the market do they help you provide or reach?
What are some of the top selling fixtures overall in the brand?
These questions can give a lot of insight into what trends might stick and what might drop off. I have to say, a response to customer requests and seeing what is a top seller really gives a lot of insight.
The Wow Light Fixture
One of my fave showrooms is Taylors at Dallas Market on the first floor of the Interior Home + Design Center. It has so many beautiful lighting fixtures on display from Visual Comfort that also has these brands under their company umbrella…..Tech Lighting, Generation Lighting and Monte Carlo.
In these multiple showrooms in this building, you’ve got really high end lighting all the way down to more budget friendly options.
Here’s the highest of the highs…..Tech Lighting
This super high end fixture looks like jewelry and has such flexibility. Designed by Sean Lavin for Tech Lighting, it can be installed in different ways, in multiples, etc. It took center stage in the showroom and well, it was definitely a show-stopper.
I wrote about flexibility as a trend after a previous tour of Lightovation in the winter of 2020 and it is still a major trend in lighting.
That fixture is stunning but definitely is designed for an ultra luxurious property.
Kelly Wearstler had some gorgeous really modern lighting for Tech Lighting as well, simple and really remarkable. This woman really just has no bounds for her creativity. I don’t know why I love these ceiling mounts in this next image so much, but I do.
I was chatting with a sales rep there and he said that the most popular fixtures in Tech Lighting though were these with the LED integrated rings. I imagine the wood element in the fixtures might have something to do with adding some warmth to these contemporary looks, contributing to their popularity.
Visual Comfort Lighting - Great for a more transitional style.
Most of my clients are looking for rather transitional lighting these days. Nothing too contemporary, but definitely cleaner lines and simpler styles.
Since almost all the homes out here in the suburbs of Houston lean traditional in some way, having that nod to a more traditional look is usually desired.
I love Visual Comfort for that purpose and often find just the right pieces there. The squared off shape of this simple chandelier paired with a hammered iron look and traditional candle style work so well for this purpose.
These fixtures are more trad, but have a cleaner aesthetic and a more modern feel in the design. Love the mixed metals with the black and brass and the matching metal shades.
Generation Lighting - Budget Friendly Options
Feiss (formerly Murray Feiss Lighting) and Seagull Lighting are both older brands that are now under Generation Lighting at Visual Comfort. These brands have always had more budget friendly lighting options and it is good to have this breadth in VC’s offerings, no doubt.
These are all good options for more budget conscious projects. I really like those bathroom fixtures from Feiss, below.
Generation Lighting has designer product too, like this gorgeous lantern style by Alexa Hampton. Love the white wood and brass combination.
Monte Carlo Ceiling Fans - Who doesn’t need a ceiling fan in the south?
Ceiling fans are a designer’s nightmare to find sometimes. As a designer in a hot climate in an area with homes that have vast, 2 story spaces, ceiling fans are almost a must and every client wants them.
I showed the brass tipped model from Monte Carlo in my last design trends post and this white one with the angular blades is quite sleek. I think would work well in any room you wanted to have a more unobtrusive ceiling fan.
Ceiling fans have come a long way!
Budget Friendly Lighting - Capital Lighting
While nothing seems that budget friendly these days with pricing going up all the time because of supply chain issues, Capital Lighting does have really good-looking, simple pieces that I often go to for budget options. They satisfy that transitional look nicely too.
Capital Lighting also gets a little trendy with rattan and beaded lighting.
Quality Lighting at good pricing
I consider the following brands to be more mid-range, but definitely design-focused. Cost is relative to everyone, but this is a price range that I go to for my clientele often, similar to Visual Comfort, shared above.
These brands, Hinkley, Hudson Valley, Troy, and Minka Lavery all provide good quality and interesting, design-forward offerings. The Mitzi brand, under Hudson Valley Lighting, offers more budget friendly lighting too.
Hinkley Lighting celebrated their 100 year anniversary at this show. Incredible for a business these days, right?
I love the conical shapes of these fixtures, they can work with just about any style. There are lots of finish combinations and sizes too, so it is easy to work a fixture like this into a design.
BTW, a good statement ceiling mount fixture is always hard to find and something I have my eye out for constantly. These below are nice and beefy.
This fixture from Troy Lighting (under the Hudson Valley brand) caught my eye. I love the solid black and white finishes and the simple shape. This larger one would be striking over an island, contrasting against a wall of cabinetry.
I saw quite a few string shades in a few showrooms, these below from Hudson Valley. This is retro, believe me! I remember string shades from way back. I do like these new shapes though and they kind of present a new spin on the string shade.
I feel like it has more style and is a lighter look than a typical drum type shade fixture.
This fixture from Hudson Valley Lighting uses that rattan wrapping that I found coming on in my last Lightovation market visit. This fixture group has a more unique shade shape too, which I liked. See that sconce down in the corner of the pic.
Robin Baron designed a line of fixtures for Minka Lavery and it debuted this market.
I used Robin’s sconce that she had developed under her own brand last year, in the Seasonal Living Showhouse on the fireplace wall. This sconce is a nice, more compact version of that and there are pendants in this design as well.
I liked her combination leather and brass fixtures as well.
This introduction of leather seems to be a new feature in lighting. I noted it last summer at the show with some other vendors too.
These were not new intros, but I hadn’t noticed them before, from Hudson Valley Lighting.
Lighting Showroom Discovery From This Market
I had not been into Maxim Lighting’s showroom before and was really impressed with their offerings. The Studio M line that is under their brand was what really drew me in.
This leather shade and wrapping on the sconce arm was so handsome, designed by Mat Sanders. I love the masculine look these fixtures have.
Oh these curvy shapes….so popular now, in lighting too!
These fixtures, designed by Nina Magnon, were quite stunning. I can just see multiples of these in a two-story entry hall, staggered at different heights. They would be amazing!
This fixture from Studio M also, is called Lariat. Love the brass rope detail there and the integrated LED.
Everything is better in multiples
This trend for multiple fixtures ganged together is definitely going strong. Hubbardton Forge (made in America) featured their pendants in various configurations and quantities ganged under one canopy.
Here is a multi-light option on a single canopy from Tech Lighting.
Currey and Co also has a program like this and displayed several fixtures throughout the showroom.
Integrated LED Lighting Is The Norm
It’s kind of hard to believe that integrated LED lighting was just ramping up a few years ago. I first wrote about it in this post and it seemed only the really modern, commercial type lighting companies were really into producing these fixtures. Now, they are everywhere.
These from Maxim caught my eye this year.
This ceiling mount from Maxim is so cool. I think it would be amazing on a wall too, maybe in multiples with a brassy toned backdrop. It would have a sort of Mondrian look.
Need a little organic, tropical glam in your lighting?
Lastly, from Currey and Co., there were lots of these new intros in a metallic brass organic look. Great for some tropical glam or to add some sparkle in a space. Maybe a garden room or an amazing feminine closet?
So, did you like the whirlwind tour? It is hard to see everything! I’m sure there were some good products I missed, but these are definitely vendors I specify regularly, so I do love getting to see their products in person.
If you have any favorite brands you’d like me to check out at the next show, let me know in the comments below.
