Do you want a tall tv cabinet to house your tv, but not necessarily a built in cabinet?
There is a real void in the market for these. Mostly, we have low tv consoles for our wide screen tvs to choose from. Not many that are tall. Likely because people keep buying bigger tvs and then they don’t have to change out their console or cabinet if they get a new, larger one. That happens a lot.
However, it is sometimes nice to have a tall piece of furniture on a tv wall, something you can take with you when you move. Something that can add height in the room and feel more substantial than a thin, black screen on the wall.
Especially if you have high ceilings, a low media console just looks so short and squatty on the wall. And the tv looks very, boring. You’ve just got to do something else to fill a really tall wall space.
There aren’t many options for those huge tvs, but I am sharing a few options today. These are taller cabinets that are on the market to house your flat screen tv. Some are “entertainment centers”, a console with two bookcases on each side to give a big built-in type look.

Examples of tall tv cabinets and when to use them
I designed this piece of furniture for a client some years ago. We wanted a real furniture quality piece for the tv that was substantial. This home is a very traditional, New England style. Not coastal New England, but more of an Americana look, with warm woods, rustic American antiques, quilts, etc. I think tvs look very modern and it can be a challenge to give them a more traditional look, without building something in.
Here’s the tv cabinet I designed 10 years ago, still looking good. :-)
A few years ago I did some Q&A’s on Instagram and these walls definitely would benefit from a tall cabinet of some kind.
Here’s one that would benefit from something tall on the wall and moving the tv could work out really well too.
You could also put a chair by the fireplace for good tv viewing in this layout with a tall tv cabinet.
Here’s another living room with a tall ceiling from one of my Designed in a Click consultations from last year. See how a short media console just doesn’t really hack it?
Short tv console doesn’t work well here on this tall wall.
Here’s what I proposed, below. A taller entertainment center cabinet with art above it to extend the height and fill up the wall better.
Use taller furniture and artwork to help fill the wall.
Here’s another Q&A where I suggested a bigger cabinet for this big, bare wall. It was nice to have the tv on this wall, as they could also see it from the kitchen in this layout.
When you really could use a built-in, a tall tv cabinet or entertainment center is an option to consider. This room felt unbalanced with the small tv console under a horizontal row of windows.
I really felt like this wall would benefit from a tall cabinet that would command attention in this room. The peaked ceiling was just calling for something tall.
A tall wood cabinet would accentuate the shape of the wall and create a nice focal point in this room.
In my MIL’s apartment in her senior living place, we used her antique hutch, removing two shelves, to house her tv. It worked great!
My MIL’s antique cabinet used to hold her tv in her senior living apartment.
Now, check out these options I’ve found online. Honestly, these are getting harder to find every day!
