We can say we love timeless design all we want, but really, throwing in a few trendy items into a room can make you feel current and on top of your design game. Let’s face it, it IS rather fun to play around with a few new trends.
Today, I’m sharing some I like that may or may not last, but won’t break your bank if you tried them now. Done in a single room in a small scale, it might be just the thing to lift your spirit and show a little design flare.
Vintage finds
Faces or busts
Capsule shape
Warmer color tones
Trims and details in upholstery
Let’s see examples of these and how you could incorporate them easily into your home.
1) Vintage Finds
Vintage finds have been going strong and will continue, especially in 2023. Thrifting videos and Facebook marketplace finds are more popular than ever! A few very personal vintage items will add character and depth to any home.
Is it time for you to go thrifting?
I have a blogpost about thrifting that shares some of the items I look for when I go shopping for vintage accessories. And see this post where I used thrifted items in a bookshelf styling.

This fun hotel in Austin used lots of vintage items to create a real sense of place. Especially in the library and the lobby, the collections added real layers and a very “Austin, Texas” vibe.

2) Faces or busts
While this motif has been popular for a bit now, after the tv series, White Lotus, aired this past season, I don’t see it going away anytime soon. The head vases in that show had some meaning in the area, described in this post from Arch Digest, and they were seen all around the hotel.
There are many places to add these in a home. An entry hall console, a bookshelf, on a sculpture pedestal, or as plates on the wall! :-)
I’ve shared some of the places I noted them most at recent markets in this post on the faces motif, after my trip to Dallas market last summer.
These bold and bright head sculptures would make a statement in any interior.
These more subtle and graphic faces double as vases.
The classic bust works in just about any interior.
Busts add sophistication to any interior. This one, from an antique shop adds a classic flair.
Plates or art? Both, and with a face motif too.
Nothing like a plaster face for a bookshelf or console to create interest.
3) Capsule Shape
Are you liking some of the big curves you’ve seen that are so trendy right now but are afraid they won’t mix in your home?
Try a capsule shaped mirror, ottoman or table!
These present a modern look and can really just stand alone without doing all-the-curvy-things as a style. They work nicely in a bathroom too to add something different and trendy.
Capsule mirrors add a curvy statement to bathrooms and bedrooms.
Love the wood frame and the textural treatment on the frame of this capsule mirror.
Light and airy with a modern shape, this bench would work great in front of a window.
This capsule shaped bench at the end of the bed is a clean-lined look made just a bit more transitional with the addition of the nailheads. Seen at HPMKT, Sherrill showroom.
I think a capsule shape is great for a dining table. It would help you add more people to the ends of the table. carlaaston.com
4) Warmer Color Tones
This “warmer color tones” trend might be disconcerting if you just redid your home in all white, gray and blue in the last few years.
You don’t need much though to add some of this trend to your home. A couple of pillows, a throw, some warm toned accessories…..these will all go a long way to add some of this style direction into your space.
I’m a fan of combining warm and cool and have talked about adding warmth back into your cool toned home in this post, “Is Beige Coming Back in Home Decor”.
These fabrics are part of a neutral scheme for a hill country property I’m working on now. That Ralph Lauren warm beige wool in the center echoes the wood floor color. Without that and a few more warm neutrals, the whole scheme might fall flat.
Mix warm neutrals in with grays to get a more layered, versatile palette.
Like designer Sherry Hart points out in our recent link up on trends, I think the browns will be making a come back too. Adding touches of browns into your home can add depth and contrast. Brown is a softer dark tone than black, so it isn’t as harsh of a contrast with all white homes.
5) Trims and Details in Upholstery
I saw more trim and details at Highpoint Market last fall, one that kept showing up was flanged edges.
Flanged edges on a leather chair has a casual look, seen at HPMKT, Fall 2022.
The flanged edges on this sofa’s cushions make for a more casual look. HPMKT Fall 2022
I kept seeing fringe on stools too. A stool or ottoman with some fringe would be a trendy small addition to any room.

More details like fringe on upholstery were seen at HPMKT Fall 2022.

I’ve always liked flanges on pillows, this mini-flange in a past project. It just has a more casual feel than a welt. carlaaston.com
You don’t have to do a whole chair or a sofa with flanged edges or fringe trim to be on trend, you can just do some pillows. :-)
