Here’s another TV wall Q&A today. The big question here was if they should reuse the old tv cabinet or not.
Before they had everything freshly painted, this was the cabinet they had.
The tv still fits in this unit and the whole unit fits on this wall. The wall width is 13’ and the overall cabinet width is 11’.
They wanted to know if they should keep this cabinet and paint it to match the trim moulding.
Here are pics of the room. You can see it is a more formal space with lots of traditional mouldings.
She also asked if she should get new sofas or may reupholster for something lighter. I said yes to that! These are just a little dark and gold, I think. Going with a lighter off-white performance fabric will help this space feel fresh.
TV Wall Recommendation
I think they need to break apart that wide bookcase and only use the center part in this room. They have a lot of furniture in here, so something more narrow would be a better fit in my opinion. Even though the wide unit might fit, I think the space needs a little breathing room.
I would definitely paint the cabinet and I’d go with a black, as it will relate to the black and white floor tile in the adjacent room. Besides, black is a classic! :-)
I do like the idea of chairs flanking the cabinet, but I’d go with something more narrow. I like these with the white cushions and the natural look of the caning on the back. I think they’d be perfect here.
Then I’d do some smaller sized art above the chairs, oil paintings with gilded frames in a dark color tone.
I like how this scales out on the wall with a little more breathing room around the furnishings. (I’m estimating that center section to be about 5-6’ wide here.) The tv will blend in with the black cabinet and I think this will all work out nicely.
I did a little rudimentary photoshopping here in Canva to give an idea of how it will look. I’d go really black with that cabinet, and in a semi-gloss finish. It will work better with the style of the room.

This living room needed some cosmetic changes to help this room feel more intentionally designed. I think redecorating here with some new furnishings might be all that is needed! Let's take a look....
