I’m sharing a couple of furniture arranging questions that came in during my June Instagram Q and A. I have to say, this first one was a little odd!
It concerned the round nook or alcove that was part of the dining area of a great room.
The homeowner wanted to know how to furnish it, whether or not to get a table to fit in there and just do a buffet console on the wall where the table is now or make a seating area out of it.
There can be lots of odd spaces in a home that seemingly have no purpose. This one would be a good spot for a breakfast table, but not with a dining table right there.
How To Arrange Furniture With this Nook?
I asked a couple of questions before I answered.
First, how many people did they want to sit at their table?
Like most people, they only seat the dining table full of people on special occasions. On a day to day basis, they could put a round table in the nook and expand it with leaves when needed.
Second, were they were going to put tile into the adjacent family room?
You can see there is carpet butting up to the tile where the chair is. They were leaving carpet there.
If there was the same flooring throughout, then the furniture from the family room could scoot a bit into that big open space they are using for the dining table now.
That space is wide and I thought putting only a console there would look empty and like something was missing.
With the carpet really claiming the family room furniture, I think it would be best to keep the table where it is. I’d like to see her add art and a chandelier to make it feel less like a pass-through space and more like a proper dining area.
Then, the nook can be filled with a pair of lounge chairs and round table, maybe an ottoman too.
What furniture to get for this upstairs tv room?
This homeowner was going to fill in the wall opening to below and wanted to get more furniture up here to enjoy this upstairs loft.
I had this situation in my house, and believe me, the sound travels down and feels like that upstairs tv is down in the room below! Good idea to fill it in.
I would do a sectional sofa here to back up to that corner there. It will get maximum seating for this space. You can get sectionals that have recliners in them if you like. And they can look good!
One of my clients did one from Arhaus in her upstairs gameroom and some of the seats recline.
Do you have a question for a designer? I have two ways for you to get answers to your decorating or design questions.
First is my Designed in a Click, an email consultation, where you are allowed up to 4 questions and can submit up to 5 photos with your questions.
The other is to join my Subscriber group on Instagram. I do a Q&A with them on the first weekend of the month. They send me a pic or two in Instagram DMs with their question and then I answer in my stories that are specifically for them. No other followers can see those stories.
Even if you don’t have a question, they are fun to follow and read.
Here are more examples of Subscriber questions, below.
I’m sharing some styling advice and the accessories that I recommended in a recent Q & A for two consoles and a stone fireplace mantel.
I think you might find this helpful too, as it deals primarily with the underlying color tone of the stone as far as what dictated the accessories and a piece of furniture she had.
Some good general decorating ideas to go by….
