Today, I’m sharing the family room and breakfast room update of a recent project. After remodeling the adjacent kitchen in a big way, there were some things in these neighboring spaces that felt a little tired or ordinary.
I just couldn’t leave it all as is without tying things together more neatly and beautifully for these wonderful clients! I was so happy when they were up for this last space to complete. :-)
Family Room Before
Here’s the family room before. They had installed new stacked stone tile on the fireplace fairly recently and the color worked well with our new, whiter Sherwin Williams Alabaster paint color we were doing all over this space. My client was tired of all the cream.
Family Room Before - New paint colors and a few cabinetry modifications were in order for this family room that had a recent stacked stone fireplace wall installed. carlaaston.com
So, while we were at it, I suggested that maybe we address the top of the cabinets on the right side to more emulate the look of the left for a more transitional look and to create some better symmetry there.
I also suggested we create some contrast and paint the cabinets a deep blue, to work with the kitchen island and barn door we had in the adjacent kitchen.
We were able to make these modifications during the kitchen remodel, so all the mess was made at the same time. :-)
Family Room After

I really love how the blue cabinetry looks now and how it all relates to the kitchen. That whiter paint overall looks better too.
The blue paint is SW Slate Tile.
The slate blue cabinetry give this fireplace wall some contrast. Books and objects just look great in this lovely color! Carla Aston, Designer | Colleen Scott, Photographer
New Furnishings
While we did mostly new furnishings, we did keep the sectional sofa and their sofa table.
I repositioned the sectional on the far side of the room, against the window wall. I felt like although it was nice facing the view, we could do some recliners there and then fill out the room better with the sectional against the windows.
It really served to open up the space to have the chairs on the open side of the room. It feels more balanced overall. (BTW, one of the recliners came in damaged and was sent back to the factory for repair, so only one is pictured here!)

FAMILY ROOM AFTER - The sofa back is not so tall as to impede the views to the beautiful garden. Those custom pillows were spot on perfect! Carla Aston, Designer | Colleen Scott, Photographer

The new items included an indoor/outdoor rug, recliners, small tables, custom pillows, coffee table and accessories. (That second recliner will be paired with the other recliner.)
Breakfast Room
A new breakfast table and chairs were in order too. Love the detail on the back of these chairs and the light finishes. It’s a subtle combination that doesn’t distract from the view of their beautiful back yard.

I’m sooooo excited to share this living and dining room makeover today, where the warm tones were minimized and fresh, light cooler colors transformed these spaces!
