I’m sharing some of my finds and impressions from Round Top Fall 2024 today. I waited until the first cool fall day to head there and it was absolutely delightful!
How I wish I could do two or three days, like I do at Highpoint Market, as you cannot do everything you want to do in one day. I am glad it is only 1 1/2 hours away though so I can head out for a day trip when there is good weather and it suits my schedule.
Things change over the years out there, some of the shows rise in popularity or fade and the type of vendors that may show there change and move around.
Various Shows Have Different Vibes
If you haven’t been, there are many different locations all through the Round Top area, where different dealers from all over the country come to set up their booths.
A few of the shows that I often gravitate to are The Arbors, The Compound, Blue Hills, Market Hill and Marburger. I’ve been to The Halles too, which is relartively high end, although I didn’t get by there this trip.
These locations have higher end items and even new pieces, they aren’t all antiques. Marburger is centered around antiques and vintage but The Arbors has some artists and jewelry vendors as well as home decor. So, they all vary a bit.
I usually like to go down to Warrenton and Northgate, these are shows that don’t have the higher end dealers but you can find some good deals there.
I like Excess I & II also, for architectural salvage and antiques. There are lots of other places to explore for sure!
Prepare to Walk
It’s all about the walking! It is nice to break it up and not do too much in one day. These are mostly all dealers set up in fields too, so be prepared for rocky gravel and unexpected dips in the grass. If you’re getting up there in age like me, I have to watch my step!
I always prefer to go on a weekday, weekends are rather packed and parking is more challenging. During the week parking is pretty easy to get though so you won’t have to lug your goods around too much.
It’s so funny, I remember when there was no internet service out there and you couldn’t use your cell phone. You had to take cash or checks because people couldn’t do credit cards or online payments. Now you can pay with almost anything, I paid for something with Venmo this time.
I also remember when Marburger charged $25 for parking, but this time it was only $15.
It is usually hot, especially in the fall as we don’t normally get cool weather down here until end of October. Check the weather and plan to go on a day that will be enjoyable for you. I’ve heard tales of people who came from out of state who were quite uncomfortable, sweating and walking.
If it is going to pour rain, you might want to wait a day or two.
What to Wear
Boy, has this place become a western fashion show!
All the girlies from Austin, Houston and Dallas come and dress for shopping with cowboy boots and hats and beautifully curled long hair.
Many people do not, like me, I’m there to work and want my trusty walking shoes and a breezy linen top, but you will see some Texas fits there for sure. If you have some boots you love but don’t get to wear them much, this is the moment you’ve been waiting for.
Decor and Furniture Finds
Now, let’s see some of the decor and furniture I found interesting. I had my eye on art this time, but I keep an eye out for what seems to be popular and selling well.
The Arbors
This booth had both soft goods and ceramics. They weave their own textiles in Paraguay, Seen at The Arbors.
The mirrors and this piece covered in shells were just incredible. Elizabeth Elinoff Designs, at The Arbors.
These were competitively priced chinoiserie ginger jars, vases, lamps and garden stools. He works with designers and someone was there loading up their U-haul while I was there with boxes of his goods. The Han House Inc. at The Arbors.
Round Top is a great place to buy art as you can purchase directly from the artist and not have to worry about shipping or having it not look exactly as you might see it online on your screen.
I loved the sepia tones of this art from Ginger Leigh Designs at The Arbors.
I purchased this acrylic gouache for my daughter from an artist from Austin that was showing at The Arbors, Johnathan Edwards. She wants to get some warm toned art pieces and I liked how graphic this was. It’s an original, he numbers them as he produces them.
I found this artist and her work really wowed me. She does these minimalistic encaustic pieces and frames them in antique French frames. She is now based in The Woodlands, where I am, but has lived in France and goes there frequently to paint. She also does some beautiful, larger scaled, soft landscape paintings. Harris Fyfe Fine Art, in The Arbors.
You can always find live edge wood and furniture at Round Top, these at The Arbors.
Market Hill
I stopped into Market Hill, as I wanted to check out the new Christmas shop they have in a back building.
I can’t resist walking through their antique dealers there. You’ll find really quality pieces and beautiful displays there.
Marburger
This was the first time I’d been back to Marburger in a while and it didn’t disappoint. Seems like there were a lot more European antiques before, but I saw quite a bit of vintage, mid-century finds this time too.
These tiny cages are from Spain, where they were for little finches to be transported when people bought them to put in their aviaries at home. The merchant would have them bring the little cage back to reuse again.
Blue Hills
Blue Hills has really expanded. They’ve added more barns and parking and, like many of the venues now, have a party barn type space.
I always like to visit Maps and Art at Blue Hills. They have vintage prints, etchings, lithographs, etc. at reasonable prices. (Which is good because framing always costs a fortune, right?)
These mushroom ones were from 1870. They categorize them by subject matter, so it is easy to find what you are looking for. (BTW, they do have a Houston showroom now!)
Janet Wiebe imports all this beautiful Murano glass from Italy. She’s now located in one of the new barns at Blue Hills.
You Never Know What You’ll Find at Round Top
I can’t help but photograph some unique things I see and there are plenty of those in Round Top.
Next stop is Highpoint Market at the end of next week. Follow along to check out my finds and see what trends will be showing up at your local retailers in the next few months/years to come.
