Odd corner to fill? Try pedestals, totems, columns and plant stands!

June 07, 2025 in Decorating, Furniture

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve run across corners or places in a room that need something, but all the major furniture is laid out well and we don’t really NEED anything else for function.

However, there can be a dead corner, a nook by the fireplace, a vacant spot in a window, etc., that is just crying out for something special.

That’s where a pedestal, totem, plant stand or architectural column might come in handy!

How much do I love these two pieces, below, adding contrast, height and interest in this back corner! I say “pieces” because I’m not sure what they are, maybe old candlesticks from a church?

Don’t they add some dark wood “antique” interest in this corner?

These decorative columns, below, add a traditional look with prominence at the entry to an interiors showroom at High Point Market.

Modern pedestals are great for plants and sculpture.

This column pedestal even has storage! Sherrill Furniture.

Love these beefy, rustic pedestals, seen at Hooker, the Bobo Intriguing Objects space.

A columnar pedestal is the perfect perch for some greens in a ceramic vase. It adds life to a vacant corner.

Sherrill Furniture in the Mr. and Mrs. Howard section has this lovely columnar pedestal.

A brassy look is always a great finish to introduce in a home, from Cyan Design.

The dark wood of this pedestal with a sculpture adds so much depth and contrast in this corner. And it has some storage too!

This totem sculplture fills a corner in the Arterirors showroom.

I will add, if you have toddlers or young children, you might not invest in these until they are older, as I can see how these could be pushed down or create a hazard as they can be top heavy if they have something on top. You could attach them to the wall if you pulled the pedestal close and used some kind of brace or bracket, but it might be best to wait a few years. :-)
