This homeowner was not replacing her travertine tile floor but wanted to do a partial kitchen remodel.
I often get questions where people are keeping travertine floors and want to know how to remodel around them so that they look intentional and purposeful in the design. I think this remodel does that really well.
I worked with this homeowner in a Designed in a Click® consultation awhile back. She had various questions about cabinetry, counters, backsplash and hood.
Here was her kitchen before the remodel.
Her goal was a look more like this, a white oak or taupe color cabinet.
This was the sketch I sent her back then. We talked about a contrasting darker wood island then and then doing a slab backsplash with new hood, moving microwave.
She’d asked about doing a contrasting countertop material and I urged her to do all the same as the kitchen was not that big and didn’t have that much counter space.
She didn’t do exactly everything I suggested, but that’s what my consultations are for, to get you thinking about different options and how to get you going on a design to include your own research and preferences.
Partial Kitchen Remodel Results!
She definitely achieved her goal because her after pics are awesome.
Here’s what they did:
Refaced the existing cabinets to get desired look, used maple with a gray stain
New quartz counters and Zellige tile backsplash
Waterfall island
New hood and move microwave to island
New black cabinet pulls
I think one of the most interesting aspects of this remodel is how the travertine floor now blends with the cabinet color and doesn’t feel like the same floor from the past kitchen. It no longer looks like a warm, gold-ish traditional kitchen, but feels more up to date and fresh.
Doing this type of cabinet color works well with a travertine floor like this and adding warm white as a contrast gives a fresh look.
This is a good lesson for those wanting to update using their older travertine floors!
Here are some older posts of mine where I talk about what to pair with travertine tile.

If you have a suburban home built about 20 years ago and you live in a hot climate like we do here in The Woodlands, it’s quite probable that you have travertine floors. While travertine has come full circle and is back in style after being out for a long time, here's how to make them feel on trend again in your home with some fresh paint colors.
