I’ve gotten clients and lots of email consultations because of this post on what to pair with travertine tile floors to make them look up to date and current. Yes, those 20 year old travertine floors can be a problem.
Builders went nuts with travertine and put it all over some really big homes here in Texas and the southwest about 20 years ago. It’s in lots of other areas of the country too, mostly the suburbs.
And this was primarily the pinky-beige stuff that doesn’t go with anything except SW Kilim Beige. :-/ (….or so the builders thought because 9 times out of 10 that was the paint color that was used with it.)
Does this sound familiar to you?
Well, I’m back with another solution that could have you rethinking all that travertine and looking at it as the best thing for your big McMansion in the burbs. (I say that fondly as I’m in the burbs and these babies keep me in business.:-)
What goes around comes around, right?
And although I think whites and cool tones will be around forever and I love what I presented before as a solution that still stands true…
….warm tones are having a comeback these days.
So, if you are considering ripping out all that travertine, you MIGHT want to consider this additional option I’m sharing today.
Lean in to the pinky-beige color tone
When I worked on the living room of the Seasonal Living Virtual Showhouse back last fall, we all voted on the wood flooring that would be used throughout the downstairs. We all gave the thumbs up to this lovely wood flooring product from Revel Woods.
Okay, so it is sort of the color of travertine, right?
And when I went to select all the products and work with the color palette for this space, I didn’t want to lean too heavily on bright whites or it would just look like every other California style modern home out there right now. I wanted the space to look progressive and create some drama and contrast.
I wanted it to have some richness and sophistication that was presented in the materials used for furnishings and finishes.
We all know blush has been popular for several years now, especially with the younger generation, so I wanted to embrace that too.
That’s how I came up with this palette.
So, what does this mean for your travertine floors?
It means there is hope for making it look fresh, modern and oh-so-lovely. :-)
How do you do that? Bring in clay and charcoal colored accents.
Mix in a dark warm gray to neutralize the pinky-beige and add in a clay color to lean in to those warm undertones that work so well here. You can mix in metallics too, I especially love a coppery color. :-)
Whites like SW Aesthetic White that are a bit of a chameleon can lighten up a formerly SW Kilim Beige wall and then the richness of clay, charcoal gray and blush can modernize that look.
Check out these palettes I put together with a typical travertine tile, the beautiful Revel Woods wood floor and some gorgeous modern looking fabrics, tiles and finishes.
I’m definitely interested in going this direction on a future project with a client or a consultation. I think it is truly a viable option for dealing with travertine flooring when you don’t want to change it all out but get a fresh, new look!
In case you missed my previous post about ways to deal with unwanted travertine floors without ripping them out, here it is.
