Wide bedroom with lots of space on both sides of the bed.

How to Arrange Furniture in a Wide Bedroom

December 07, 2022 in Decorating, Design Plans, Furniture, Q&A

Arranging furniture in a really wide bedroom can be a bit confusing. Once you get the king bed and some wide nightstands in there, the corners can still feel a bit empty.

Such was the case with this primary bedroom. Let’s take a look.

The windows and door openings really dictate the location of the bed here. The room was designed for a king bed to fit between the windows.

The main entry door makes for one of the side walls to be a little shorter than the other.

There is a fireplace with tv above directly opposite the bed with a built-in to the left of the fireplace. There are two doors in the corners there to the bathroom and closet.

The homeowner had a tall lingerie chest in dark wood in the corner there.

They did not need any new storage or cabinets necessarily as they had enough storage in their closet.

She sent me her room dimensions and I laid out the space.

I moved the bench to the end of the bed and located the two green lounge chairs on the long wall to the left of the bed. When you walk in, you’ll see those over there and she can do a large piece of art or a quad of art above the two chairs.

A 10 x 14 rug will fit best in here, I wouldn’t go smaller. I try to line a rug up just in front of the nightstands and want enough of it to show in front and on the sides.

I proposed a new small chest instead of the lingerie chest. I felt like it looked crowded in that corner and something a little shorter and wider would look better on the wall beside the main door.

This chest is from Ballard and comes in that lovely color that would look good with their wall color. The style of this piece works nicely with the existing nightstands too.

I felt like the built-in looked a little utilitarian and almost like an afterthought. It didn’t fill the nook there and didn’t do much for that wall.

I really felt like this wood bookcase might be better, more of a piece of furniture. Then it could float in that recess there and add some warmth.

I liked the hunter green lounge chairs and feel like that would be a nice color mixed in with the light seafoam green walls.

I’d bring a little more of that color into the room then, with pillows on the bed. I’d also add a brassy round side table between.

A little gilded sunburst mirror above the bed is nice with a nice rug to add softness to the space.

I think it all ties together nicely and fills up the room.

Big bedrooms are a good problem to have, but they do need furniture to make them feel finished and well designed. :-)

I did a Q and A last spring with another big bedroom situation.
