This is one item you typically DON’T see designers purchasing for their clients when they accessorize their homes at the end of an installation.
Have you ever seen picture frames out on tabletops, in bookcases or on dressers in a designer’s portfolio?
It is definitely something more personal to the client and is usually something they do on their own after the designer leaves the house. :-)
If you choose some beautiful frames and use them selectively in your home, your favorite personal photos can actually enhance your interior and add to your home’s personality and style.
I’ve scoured the internet for some frames I think are beautiful in their own right but would be even better with your favorite photo featured. I also have a few tips on selecting frames for your own style, so read on below.

What Picture Frame to Choose For Your Style?
Natural Materials, Textural, Neutral Style
This is my own personal favorite look. I love neutrals and texture in an interior and these frames all fit the bill. Bone, horn, marble and wood with a bit of brass or gold is always a good mix for this style.
(You can click on any of these photos below and it will take you to the online shop.)
Coastal Look
Coastal looks call for wicker, rattan and shell. Wood tones that are light and even bone can be a good choice. The soft blue fabric covered frame, below, adds a coastal color to these selections.
Minimalist Style
Clean, simple frames work in this type of space using some thin black metal framing or even glass floating frames that stand on their own. Love the asymmetrical walnut frame below, as a nice way to warm up a minimalist look.
Boho - Colorful Global
This style of interior begs for some color and whimsy. A boho style incorporates global touches and vintage looks.
Rustic Cabincore
Avoid getting too kitschy here, stick with rustic woods, dark metal, stone, hair on hide. They’ll last and add taste and style to a rustic abode.
Grandmillennial Style
This style is celebrating all things granny chic….. dainty details, brass and a more feminine touch. Keep it lean and not too overbearing here and it will be lovely.
These frames have a real “Grandmother” look to me. I remember my mother had a frame just like this one, below, in our home when I was growing up.
Shiny metal finishes and beaded looks work well for a grandmillennial style. Ceramic frames have a vintage appeal too and give some feminine vibes. Bamboo look frames also fit here.
Masculine Style
Leather, wood, black marble, these are all materials that work for a masculine vibe. And by the way, women like masculine interiors too! They’re a favorite of mine.
Transitional Style
One of the most common design styles out there I see is a transitional style. A home with some traditional items and then some more contemporary elements. (This transitional style is more of a mix of the two than something like a transitional styled hotel that feels bland and boring.)
So, for this kind of look, I recommend mixing your picture frames some too. I would keep things kind of simple looking overall with some beautiful materials, but then add in a gilded, more ornate, small frame or two.
Picture Frame Size and Quantity
When it comes to quantity, my mother’s house could have beat anyone’s. She had multiple family photos on walls, tables, bookshelves and dressers.
If you love having all those family photos, by all means, it is your home and you enjoy them the way you want. :-)
However, if you would like a few designer tips, here’s what I might recommend.
Mostly I like to space picture frames out, one on a shelf in a perfect spot on top of a stack of books, a group of three together, etc.
I prefer smaller frames, too many of those big 8 x 10 ones can crowd a tablescape and begin to look like a memorial service. :-)
Spread them out, not too many in any one room. They shouldn’t be the only thing you decorate with. They are great to pair with stacks of books!
