I'm sharing some pics of two more of the cool houses we toured in LA during Dwell on Design's Home Tours. I have to say, Californians have this indoor/outdoor living down beautifully.
Spanish Style Home
I'm going to start off with this Spanish style home. I have some fun exterior shots, we weren't allowed to photograph in side the home. It's just such a cool house though, I wanted to share.
When we walked up the front steps, that built-in bench with a blue and gray graphic tile greeted us. That pattern was incorporated at the entry too. I loved how they painted the house a gray that made it look more modern. The succulents really stand out against that backdrop.
Check out this raised vegetable garden in the side yard. I'd do this in a heartbeat if my side yard got enough sun!
House Perched On A Hill
This house, below, perched on the edge of the hill, seemed like you were up in a treehouse, when you were on the balconies.
Front Entry - You went down the stairs to the front patio, complete with doggie bowls, before entering the house.
The first room off that patio was the modern kitchen with a stainless steel backsplash and a glass front refrigerator. Skylights rule in California, BTW.
This home had smaller, dedicated spaces with some special vignettes set up for different activities. Here was a quiet reading nook.
Loved this modern styled bathroom with its horizontal slab mirror.
The stairs to the floor below landed in a well with full height windows. Just opposite those windows was the home office.
This lounge space below opens up to the lower deck. The mirror reflects the view and light into this intimate space.
I love the greenery used in the vases, below. Philodendron leaves are one of my own go-to clippings to bring in from the garden. Their scale and sculptural look make them the perfect dramatic accessory.
The homeowner was James Baker and this home was for sale. You can contact him here if you are shopping for a cool house in LA.
Lunch in a home that Elvis once lived in, filled with exquisite art, furnishings and lighting, was one of the fascinating treats we experienced on the LA Design Trail tour last month. Come see my pics of this beautiful place, filled with so much design goodness….
