5 Gallery Wall Arrangements That Work!

January 04, 2025 in Decorating, Inspiration

I’m sharing 5 ways to hang multiple items on a wall. Whether you like symmetry or appreciate a more random approach, you’re bound to find something here that pleases your eye.

I have some great examples of the following, within this post.

  1. Symmetry Around a Mirror

  2. Line it up!

  3. Randomly Grouping Like Items

  4. The Grid

  5. Free for All!

1) Symmetry Around a Mirror

This arrangement can work really well in dining rooms, as typically that wall behind the table can look really big and empty.

I love mirrors in dining rooms as they typically reflect the chandelier and the tablescape AND the people around it when it is being used. I also love when a dining room is right off the entry as you walk into a home, and then you see yourself in that mirror in the dining room when you enter. :-)

I always hang mirrors vertically, rarely horizontally, so they don’t look like “dresser” mirrors. When hung vertically, there is usually room for art to add color and pattern!

I love to do a central mirror with art on each side in a dining room, this image from one of my past projects.

2) Line it Up!

Horizontally or vertically, this is a common wall decorating arrangement that works well, especially over sofas or headboards or on a vertical strip of wall.

3) Randomly Grouping Like Items

Whether it is a grouping of family photos, a similar mix of art like landscape paintings, still lifes or figures, or even types of frames, some kind of unifying theme to all of the wall decor can have a harmonious effect.

Gold, black and white tie this grouping of wall decor together.

Gilded wood framing unifies this wall and contrasts nicely on the brown wall.

Maps combined with black and white architectural art works together on top of this similarly patterned wallpaper.

Matching white frames and mats as well as the colorful subject matter of the art make for a unified look here.

4) The Grid

A grid requires more precision when hanging but is a great way to sort of spread out your arrangement. A few extra inches between each item can cover more wall space. Plus, you can get away with ready-made frames and mats for a more cost conscious investment.

They really make the same impact as an oversized piece of art and can give you a little flexibility on the overall shape.

This is definitely one for people that love precise looks. :-)

5) Free For All

We all know this looks effortless, randomly hanging artwork and wall decor willy-nilly.

But is it really?
