I have some top interior design and decorating trends to share today, that I see coming up for 2025. I’m sure you design savvy readers have noticed them too. Let’s take a look!
More antiques - strip them for a natural look
Vintage or antique frames with modern art
Color - Already tired of olive green and rust? Dark browns are more timeless.
Traditional design details are coming back.
The Nancy Myers and Ralph Lauren aesthetic is so popular now!
Busts or Faces used in art and decor still popular
Color Drenching
1) More Antiques!
There is such boom in popularity for using antiques and vintage furniture these days. Whether it is because of the cost of new furniture or just the appeal of having some previously loved furnishings, I see this trend growing in the next year.
The ease of using Facebook marketplace to acquire used furnishings really helps make these items more attainable. Companies like Taskrabbit make it easy to get a pick up and delivery of a one off piece without bothering your friend with a truck.
I have noticed dealers stripping many of their pieces like these below, to expose the natural wood. This presents a fresh look in an interior.
2) Vintage or Antique Frames With Modern Art
Here is an example of the best of both worlds, old and new. Vintage or antique frames paired with modern, abstract art. What a lovely way to add a little traditional look to a plain, transitional home or vice versa.
3) Color - Already tired of olive green and rust? Browns are more timeless.
Whenever I see a trend going strong like the distinctive olive green and terracotta/rust tones I have in the past few years, I often wonder how long they will last before we tire of them.
I remember during the Tuscan look era, I was really ready for a light, bright look, tossing out all those heavy fabrics, textures, fringe, faux finishes, etc. I do think an update of all those dark, moody interiors will come eventually.
So, how do you get that look now to enjoy and create a more timeless style that will last a long time?
Go with brown!
It’s more neutral and therefore, works with many different color combinations.
This look was in a showroom at Highpoint Market this fall and honestly, it is a look straight from the past. I think it has a timeless quality that could be around for a long time and feels perfectly of-the-moment too.
4) Traditional design details are coming back.
Traditional design is making a big come back. There is so much social media chatter over more trad aesthetics these days. People are seeking comfort, security and don’t want to live in a cold, plain, cookie cutter environment. They want their home to reflect their lifestyles and passions.
Everyone seems to be interested in adding layers and pattern to their homes’ interiors. Wallpaper is really popular these days.
5) The Nancy Myers and Ralph Lauren aesthetic is so popular now!
This timeless style is all over social media, popular with even younger generations these days. Why? Because it is homey, comfortable, warm, inviting and just all around easy to mix together.
My own home reflects this collected, traditional style and I’ve always loved it.
6) Busts, faces, portraits used in art and decor
This has been a popular motif for art and decor and I still see it going strong. Whether a classic bust or a modern portrait used on the wall, the image of a person can be a striking decorative element in any room.
7) Color Drenching
Color drenching is not new, I wrote about it years ago, without that coined name, but same idea. :-) I’ve never liked the idea of all the trim having to be white or wood, no matter what color is on the walls, but it can be a hard sell most of the time.
You see, painting trim, walls, ceilings and doors is a lot more trouble than just painting walls. Drenching the room can be a much more expensive and time consuming paint job.
You want to be very sure of that paint color too, because you won’t be inclined to tackle that project again if you decide to change things up down the road. Make sure you love the color before going with this look.
We did navy blue color drenching on walls, ceiling, trim and cabinetry in this library, below. It really enveloped the space and let that bright upholstery stand out.
Coming up in 2025…
I’m heading to Lightovation and Dallas Market in early January to see the latest intros there, then on to KBIS, the national kitchen and bath show in February. Check back to see more design trends coming your way!
I’m looking forward to 2025 with more travel and I’m digging into the design of a whole house remodel now. Look for two projects I’ve completed that I’ll be sharing here soon.
Have a great new year!
