These days, everyone is sooo into...
Those are popular types of rugs going right now, each of which would be beautiful additions to any interior.
(This blogpost was written in 2013. Yes, these rugs are popular today, in the 2020’s, and outliving all rugs in style. :-)
For the record:
(Yes, I know, there are many different types of oriental rugs, with many different names that originate from many locales. But, for simplicity's sake, as well as the strength of my site's SEO, let's just call them all "oriental.")
But what about that traditional Persian or Oriental style rug your Mother or Grandmother prized?
The ones that are red and navy; the rugs that are rust and black and have a unique, light blue color in the pattern; the ones with fine patterns and vivid colors...
...The style that has me wondering:
Are oriental rugs really out of style?
It appears to me, the average household doesn't seem to have rediscovered their appeal. I never get clients requesting them anymore and if they already have one, they are usually trying to find some other style to replace it.
I think an oriental rug provides an “old money” look to an interior, because you know that rug probably wasn’t selected at a store just yesterday. That rug has been hanging around for years. It’s not exactly a hot seller right now. It was most likely passed down in the family when someone way-back-when had the money to make an investment in a piece for their home that they knew would last for many generations to come.
Want to see a floor covering that’ll hide any type of dirt or stain on the planet? Get an oriental rug.
Want to see a rug that will last beyond the lifetime of its original owner? Get an oriental rug.
Want to see a rug that’ll work with any color scheme you can dream of, including white or beige or grey? Get an oriental rug.
They’re perfect, and oh-so stylish when paired with gorgeous wood floors, white walls, beautiful wood furniture, leather, linen or velvet upholstery, brass light fixtures and maybe even some mid-century goodness. Mmmm... Sumptuous!
So no — the oriental rug will never be out of style.
It’s a classic and survives all trends.
Here’s another oriental rug at the entry of one of my client’s homes. I purchased this at Round Top and it works perfectly to add color and hide any soil that comes in.
