As a designer, I don’t really love with having ceiling fans in a room.
I’d rather put up a gorgeous chandelier, pendant, or some sculptural light fixture that makes a statement!
But, I live in Texas. And here, ceiling fans are how we survive the heat, especially in two story spaces.
And while I’ll give in to beauty over practicality just about any time, when it comes to Texas heat I have to find a way to make this work for most of my clients.
This is an older post of mine, but after perusing the internet for a few hours looking for two ceiling fans for a project I’m working on, I thought I’d update this shopping guide for ceiling fans and republish it. I’ve included some newer fans in the links below.

We all know the ceiling fans we hate:
The ones with the boob lights, the spider lights and overly ornate “Tuscan” details, like these ones below.
Any ceiling fan in a kitchen, it just cools your food so fast and imagine all the dust that gets slung around from a fan that isn’t properly maintained.
You get the idea.
Ceiling Fans I Like
Ceiling fans are getting better looking every year. I love the brass and white combinations out now on the market.
I often use the Minka Aviator on projects. I love its sleek design.
Here’s a cute little mini ceiling fan we put in a laundry room.
I haven’t been a big fan of the looks of a fandolier, but this one is something I would use. It is 30” diam and I like the way the fan is covered by the shade on the sides paired witht the LED strip.
I’ve gathered up some fans below that can actually enhance the design of a space.
Here are some to LOVE in your home.
