Remember The Mary Tyler Moore Show? What about that “M” on her wall ... do you remember it?
While I was growing up, I always wanted to be Mary Richards. She was independent and smart, yet vulnerable. She was making it in the big city on her own.
As for myself, I come from a very small town in Texas and also had dreams of making it in a big city. I was in love with the idea of having a career and being independent.
Back then, I loved her style and how she made that one room apartment so inviting. It was the place everyone wanted to be.
One particular thing she had that I always had my eye on was that “M” hanging on her wall. I remember wanting one to decorate my own apartment one day, with my own initial, of course.
After all these years, I still remember the episode when she moved into her new apartment.
All her friends and co-workers from the newsroom stopped by to see it. It was a more sophisticated high-rise apartment than the house she lived in next to Rhoda and Phyllis, and this made her feel torn over moving.
At the end of the episode, as everyone was leaving the apartment on their way to dinner, she stayed back for a moment. She had to put the “M” up on the wall of her new place.
Perhaps that’s what makes us so drawn to letters of the alphabet. Perhaps that why we feel them to be every bit as special as a piece of art.
We’re staking our claim. Making a place our own. Proclaiming that this is our little piece of the world. Like a sign.
When I saw this image on Pinterest, I wanted it, for my larger loft studio/showroom space, someday. :-)
Since then, I’ve been noticing old signage letters popping up in interiors more and more. And I, for one, love them - especially in a rustic chic type of interior, or maybe something that has an industrial vibe.
So, what do you think?
Would you stake your claim with a big, bold letter?
