If you had to pick ONE for your home, which would you prefer to have?
Thoughts of a home library conjour up visions of shelves filled with beautiful books, where reading, quiet contemplation and study is enjoyed.
Yet even though modern society is quickly moving away from bounded, physical books in favor of reading from electronic devices, the idea of spending time in a beautiful home library is an urge we will forever hold onto.
On the other hand, a home office brings work to mind.
Business calls, computers, research, stacks of paper, todo lists, that uncomfortable desk chair that's killing your lower back... ;-(
When was the last time you anxiously awaited the moment you got to spend time in a place filled with stuff like that?
What you label an environment and the energy that inspires its design can significantly impact your attitude and perception towards that space.
So, if you need a bit of an attitude adjustment towards the activities of your work-life, you should consider embracing a new, less threatening perspective towards your home office by simply adjusting its design. After all: They say there's power in positive thinking, so it would make sense for your work room to be designed with more optimism ;-)
- Maybe you don’t really need a big desk. Perhaps a table would work better for you.
- Cloaking your room with bookshelves can make you feel warmly insulated by things you love. You know, sort of cocooned.
- Or, if you don’t have many books, pictures of loved ones and other memorabilia can help transform a home "office" a home "library."
- Give some thought as to what makes you feel most comfortable, creative, productive, etc. when you're working. Is it in a chair with your laptop? ...Then get a comfy chair in there.
Your end goal for this project is to make sure your space is as pleasant and inviting as it can possibly be so you can be as productive as you know -- and have maybe forgotten -- you can be.
As for me: I’m about to start calling my home office my “Library" - and, hopefully, SOON, seeing as how its construction is almost complete.
Finally, we’re now cleaning up all the dust and moving things back in, which means we also have the opportunity to do a chore we should have done a looooong time ago: Throwing away stuff that's no longer needed and reorganizing everything else.
And I must say: The space feels so different! Each day, it's looking more and more like a library I can love! And even though I’m not keeping a ton of books in there (I have lots of bookcases in other parts of the house), the space just feels so -- well -- library-ish!
Mmmmmm, delicious ;-)
