Hi there, Designers and Design Bloggers!
I thought I'd share a few stats and facts with you today, just in case you were wondering if some of the strategies I've mentioned here in the last few weeks are really working for me.
Because I believe wholeheartedly in developing several ways to make money as a designer AND I firmly believe the fastest way to make money in interior design is with the one-time consultation....I thought I'd show you how it all stacks up for me.
Keep in mind that I've been blogging for years, over 5 years at my current url and I have owned my own business in my area since 2001, moving it out of my home 8 years ago into a design studio.
Stats On My Houzz Tactics
In this post, I wrote about my workaround for answering direct questions on Houzz, while still quietly maintaining a profile there.
I posted this note on Houzz about this project's source list being available on my website.
"To obtain sources, copy and paste this link into your browser. http://carlaaston.com/designed/before-after-the-extraordinary-remodel-of-an-ordinary-custom-builder-home"
I included that note on all the photos on Houzz of that project. This photo had the most "Saves".
Back at the end of June 2017, I included the form for the pdf source list download, at the bottom of the post on my own website.
Since then, in 8 months time, 148 people have submitted their email address to download that source list.
That's 148 questions I didn't have to answer directly.
That's 148 email addresses that were automatically added to my Email list in Mailchimp.
And guess what? I spent only about half an hour putting that info up and including the form in that post.
Time well spent, no?
February Income Earnings For Consultations
Then, last week I wrote about my local consultations and e-consultations as being the fastest way for an interior designer to make money in interior design. And if you're wondering about where to invest your time in diversifying your income, this is what I highly recommend.
Local, one-time only consultations - Six (6) at my rate of $375 = $2250
Designed in a Click Consultations, Email only - Ten (10) at my rate of $175 = $1750
Was this a larger than average month for me on these consultations?
Yes. I normally try to keep them at somewhere between 3-5 ea. per month. I had shut them down until mid-January for the holidays, so I was a bit backed up. However, it was nice to have this money coming in and to meet some new people interested in design and remodeling.
Just a note about consultations.....while these are easier to acquire and get paid immediately for, you have to develop this skill. I find this easy because of my expertise and the local area that I'm in. I have years of experience doing remodeling work and have a vast knowledge of design and products at my fingertips. It is quite easy for me to pull from that.
If you are just starting out, price yourself accordingly and work into it, gaining more experience as you go. Practice helps.
Affiliate Marketing Income earnings
Next stat I want to report is my affiliate marketing dollars that I've earned since Jan 1st.
I mentioned in this post I did on the Design Bloggers Conference, that I had wanted to step up my game in that department and that, while nice to utilize, it was not a major income source for me. At the time of that post, November was the month of my biggest earnings, at around $1000.
Since January 1st this year, now at the end of February, my earnings total about $850.
That is money earned but not paid yet, it takes a few months for it to pay through Reward Style. Those are all my own earnings too, from my own blog, not any percentages earned via other bloggers I have connected with Reward Style.
November is still my highest month so far, but I haven't really been focusing on it. I have not put out any new posts with affiliate links though, since I had posts that were sponsored from KBIS primarily, in these two months.
I did just have a post go out about Easter decor though, and I'm hoping that might eventually earn me some affiliate dollars. :-)
Income Earned From My Own Digital Download Products
Lastly, I wanted to share the income generated by the products I've been selling from my site.
These are all made by me and produced so that I can let my primary reader (or avatar as some say) go deeper in a specific niche. They are designing their homes themselves and are looking for a little assistance, tips, and guidance.
Most of my readers find me by researching specific questions, so these are what I am developing to help them go deeper and answer even more of their concerns.
January - $471
February - $613
I'm submitting this so that you can see some possible options that might work for you. Diversifying is a challenge but can be done. You just have to analyze where your own strengths are best utilized and how you can make money with them.
All the income earnings I mention above are secondary to my design practice fees and product sales.
I just want to reiterate one fact that I mentioned in my post, What's The Fastest Way To Make Money In Interior Design?
With regard to most of these stats above (except the one-time consultation)......
"You have to build a career, a following, a readership, an audience...something, in order to make these options work."
